While these medications do promote sleep, once they are stopped it is likely that the insomnia will return until the underlying cause is treated. Many opt for another way of treating their insomnia by way of herbal remedies. For centuries, years before there were any pharmaceutical drugs available for sleep disorders, including insomnia; people relied on herbal remedies to enhance sleep. Some of these have worked relatively well for many people.

Melatonin as a sleep aid has showed some significance as a non prescription way of insomnia treatment It has been shown that Melatonin capsules are not only very useful for treating insomnia but also for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and jet lag. Many people that seem to toss and turn all night long are usually very attracted to Melatonin as a sleep aid. Certain people are not candidates for Melatonin such as women that are pregnant and anyone that suffers from an autoimmune disease. Over the counter sleep aids are mainly composed of antihistamines which are usually used for allergies and so forth but they do have properties that will make you tired. Before you start popping over the counter sleep aids ask yourself what you intend to do if you take these pills for a week and when you stop you still can not fall asleep? Many of the medications that can be purchased without a prescription leave one feeling groggy the next day and they are not on top of their game in situations that require them to be such as when driving a car, operating machinery, or at work in general.

In other words the relaxation techniques must be used nightly, the meditation and/or yoga must be done routinely and visual imagery must also be done regularly in order for this to be effective.

People live very high paced lifestyles these days which are a large part of the problem because it takes away from the amount of time that is reserved for sleeping. Medically or clinically sleep deprivation is broken up into four different classifications, lifestyle, health disorders, side effects from medication, and clinical disorders. It is very important to know what is causing your sleep deprivation because depending on the cause will depend on the treatment. If lifestyle is causing the sleep problem then a change will have to be made, if it is a medication issue then maybe the medication will have to be changed, if it is a health disorder then it will need to be addressed, and finally if it is a clinical disorder then that too can be treated.
